Behind The Lens

Location

This was shot in studio, to promote the opening of the studio. The images were to be used in an exhibition at the opening evening of the studio

Time

This was shot in the late afternoon, we shot the whole day and ended off the shoot with a couple of beautiful clean portraits.

Lighting

The lighting was SUPER simple, one key and one fill. I often find the subject outweighs the lighting technique 99% of the time!

Equipment

I shot this on a Nikon D810, probably on my 85mm I never used to use anything other than that lens. Lighting was with 2 Profoto D1's with the Profoto XL umbrella as a key as well as a normal S umbrella for fill.

Inspiration

I was inspired by the pure beauty of nature, two of the most beautiful things in the world in one image. A women and flowers.. Its that simple. The Initial part of the series was more about the blooming of a human being from a seed.

Editing

I kept the post as natural as possible in terms of skin retouching and dodging and burning, I had to work extensively on the hair, as most retouchers do fro beauty portraits! I normally do global color correction in Lightroom and then bring it into PS to do skin retouching and dodging and burning, then final touches of color correction in PS as well.

In my camera bag

Currently, I am just in love with my Sigma 50 1.4 ART, I shoot mostly everything with it. My Canon 5dsr gives me the megapixels I need in order to make large high quality prints, I have a Tamron 70-200 as well as a Tamron 15-30. For lighting, I have a Profoto B1 and a spare battery that I squeeze in along with the lenses. My Camranger is never car from my camera, its a great tool to have if youre a stickler for perfection like myself and clients really love being able to see the images on their ipads right away. Color accuracy is also important to me, so I keep a Spydr Checkr color passport in my bag at all times too!

Feedback

Focus on your Subject, make sure theyre comfortable and happy. Nothing is harder to fix than an uncomfortable, rigid model. Take the extra time in Photoshop to pay extra attention to detail, rushing usually makes an image look cheap. Nothing can be perfect, so at some point you have to just sit back and accept what you have created. When it comes to the actual shooting, try your best to be connected to the model; chimping or wasting time can cause a shoot to fail. I try not spend more than 15minutes shooting a particular look, sometimes less time gets better images.
