Behind The Lens

Location

I took this particular photo in the Addo Elephant Park in South Africa.

Time

It was in the sweltering afternoon heat in the middle of summer and we had been driving around the game park searching for a herd of elephants for hours. Suddenly we came across this herd of Zebras which turned out to be quite tame. I'm a sucker for close ups but didn't have the lens I needed on me at the time, luckily the animals let us drive up next to them and snap away to our hearts desire as they grazed.

Lighting

The time of day (about 3-4pm) meant the angle of the sun threw an interesting shadow across the face of the zebra from the right of frame.

Equipment

It was shot off of the Sony NEX-VG10E which is primarily meant for video, which made it quite interesting to fiddle with setting to get the right exposure.

Inspiration

The herd of zebra were so calm and happy with us that I just had to sneak in there and get a nice close-up.

Editing

I didn't do much processing, basically I pushed up the brightness a tad as the right half of the frame was a little dark but that was pretty much it.

In my camera bag

The first thing I always pack is my memory card. No memory, no photo.

Feedback

We are always drawn to the eyes of animals and they often are our point of focus in nature photographs. I often use the rule of thirds and the golden ratio to place the eye/eyes of the animal in an aesthetically pleasing position in the frame. Even if you aren't aware of it your brain finds the beauty in the asymmetry, everybody loves a bit of asymmetry.
