Location
This photo was taken at a local park in Minneapolis at the height of fall. My first time visiting and I couldn't have loved this location any more. The vibrancy and depth of the fall colors created stunning pieces of art that to this day are some of my favorite images ever taken.Time
The sun is filtering through the leafs, soft and angelic creating a gorgeous rim light in the model's hair. As we walk through the park the leaves are glowing from the setting sun, the colors are deep and rich and there was not a single spot in the park that didn't look amazing. This image was taken on October 21st, around 6.00PM.Lighting
I wanted to do justice to the setting sun and the soft light filtering through the leaves, as well as to the rich colors of the fall leaves while not loosing the model's features. So using a single flash firing through a white umbrella I lit the model's face while adjusting my settings to keep the contrast of the background intact.Equipment
This image was shot with a Canon 5d Mark iii and a Tamron 70-200 zoom lens at f4.0 along with a single speed light mounted on a tripod.Inspiration
I knew I wanted the typical Minnesota fall colors in the background and using the rustic blanket that the model used. Then I saw the thorn bushes and placed the model in the middle of it all to create some depth to the image as well as a bit of edginess. The image might not qualify for the rule of thirds as my model is place right in the middle, but every once in a while you have to break the rules and for me, this image works by doing so.Editing
Post-processing was done in Photoshop CS6 where I did some skin retouching on the model and used a dodge and burn technique to highlight her stunning features and gorgeous cheekbones. I brought out the true colors of the background using different curves and levels layers. Since I'm shooting in raw the colors are muted when uploaded onto the computer so I wanted to ensure I added back the color in post to what we actually saw at the park.In my camera bag
I always bring way too much equipment with me no matter what type of shoot I am heading to, it's kind of like packing for a trip - you never know what outfits might be needed. However, my favorite equipment and most used equipment is my Canon 5D Mark iii along with my Canon 85 1.2ii lens. These two combined are fool proof and works for any outdoor situation. Also in my bag you'll find a couple of speed light flashes, my Canon 35 1.4 as well as my Tamron 70-200 2.8. You'll notice that I love shooting with a shallow depth of field making my subjects pop and creating a soft and creamy background.Feedback
I love experimenting with lights, both natural and artificial light sources to create statement art pieces for my clients. When using artificial lights, like the speed light used in this particular image, I always expose for the background first to ensure I can capture all of the details and nothing is blown out or fall into deep shadow. I then set my flash to fill the subject until I find an exposure that I find pleasing to the eye.
