Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at the Lake Havasu Ballon Festival which happens in January. The balloon pilots all try to launch from a spot they think will allow them to dip the basket (and it’s passengers) into the water right next to the London Bridge. The best vantage point is from a boat just after sunrise, which is how I manage to snag this shot.

Time

I had to get up early to put the boat in the water. Probably 6 am. We packed a snack for breakfast and motored around to a spot by the bridge where we waited there for the better part of an hour before a balloon came by near 8am

Lighting

I was luckily positioned with the sun positioned just behind the London Bridge, lighting up the balloon.

Equipment

Nikon D5300, 18-55 lens set with a narrow aperture to keep everything in focus.

Inspiration

Composition and lighting came together in a way that begged the shutter to be clicked. It was gorgeous outside.

Editing

Minimal post-processing for color and contrast. That’s it! I luckily didn’t need anything else.

In my camera bag

My Nikon, 50mm, 35mm, 10-20mm, flash, remotes, 2 tripods, and some small LED static lights. Oh, and lots of extra batteries and memory cards.

Feedback

Don’t be afraid to get up early or stay out late. Some of my best shots are before 8am or after sunset. Be aware of where the sun is compared to your subject as well as what’s around your subject in the frame. Shoot a lot and bring extra batteries!
