At Shiloh National Military Park, Tennessee, this place got it's name because it was a central Union line, that was attacked and surrounded, by massed units of Confederate soldiers. Eventually, the southerners overcame and won the day, only after stiff resistance with many wounded, dying or captured soldiers. The fight lasted into a second day, seeing the northerners route the Rebels from the field and winning the battle.
