Behind The Lens

Location

I was at the Perth Zoo in Western Australia and just loved spending time in the Aftican Savana.

Time

I was lucky enough to be able to be there all day. I took this photo during the middle of the day when they were being very peaceful and magestic

Lighting

All natural lighting! Got lucky with the sun shining right on them to highlight their perfect colours

Equipment

I used a Sony a37 camera with a Sony 55-200mm f/4.0-5.6 DT Alpha A-Mount Telephoto Zoom Lens

Inspiration

I always love coming to the savanna area in the zoo to take photos. The animals are so vibrant and exciting to photograph. You can always get something new each time you go

Editing

Nothing after the shot. Just a small increase in colour saturation on camera

In my camera bag

My Sony with three basic lenses and a Nikon film camera. I also always carry my tripod and gorilla pod with cleaning equipment for on the go touch ups I usually carry extra film rolls and batteries and a spare SD card

Feedback

Patience! Generally going to the zoo I take anywhere between 200-400 photos and only end up with 30 or so that I like. Using the natural light is a major point in my photos and capturing texture and closing in on the faces of the animals I feel creates a connection with the animal.
