Several years ago, I had the opportunity to go to New York City. I visited the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. My parents were one of the last group of immigrants to go through Ellis Island. As a child, I was told stories about sitting in the large room on benches waiting for the lung x-ray to be reviewed, but seeing the Statue of Liberty in the distance. When I saw it for myself, it brought to life all of the risks and sacrifices my parents endured to come and create a new life for themselves.
