Behind The Lens

Location

Took this in a field behind my neighborhood. I have used this field many times now and so long as the timing and cloud cover is right, it always gives me a great look.

Time

I took this at early sunset. Thanks to the cloud coverage this day I had some impressive skies to work with and still had good golden ambient light.

Lighting

I do occasionally use off camera flash lighting for shots like this. However, on this particular day it was not needed. I shot in RAW and did use some layering and masking to bring out the natural sky from the shot. I was not blown out but the contrast and shadows have been deepened.

Equipment

Nikon D300s 50mm prime lens (lives on my camera).

Inspiration

This man is an occasional couch guest who graces us with his amazing stories and indulges our magical side ;) When I wanted to do a wizard shoot he was all about it.

Editing

I use Photoshop and shoot in RAW. I usually begin by adjusting my levels for my subject. I will often create a second layer of the same image adjusted in RAW for the sky and then use masking to blend the two layers. For this shot I mostly just added to the depth by deepening shawdows in the clouds.

In my camera bag

50mm speedlight sb600
