Behind The Lens
Location
The photo was taken in my hometown of Saranac Lake, New York which is located in The Adirondack Park.Time
This was an amazing experience when I took this photo. Saranac Lake is consistently one of the coldest places in the United States, and we experience some of the harshest winters you could imagine. This last year was different though. It was January and we had no ice or snow at the time, which was unheard of! My nephew and I I reached this bay that is just a short walk off the road. We reached the water after the sun had passed behind the mountains which was around 4:50 PM. We thought we had missed the sunset, but right before we turned around to leave, the clouds began to ignite into this brilliant orange and violet! The water was completely still and reflected the clouds like a mirror leaving my nephew in complete awe as I took this shot.Lighting
I've always had a fascination with natural light. I never go out looking to create a mood with a photo, I let the photo create the mood. Sunsets are gambles too, because you never quite know what the sky will do. Every sunset has its own unique feel and getting out and experiencing each and everyone one that I can is one of the best feelings I can imagine. Be it gloomy or golden clouds, each one invokes such strong emotions that I can't resist chasing them.Equipment
I took this shot with my Canon Rebel T5i with the 18-55mm kit lens. I'm fairly new to photography so I don't own a lot of equipment besides my two kit lens and an old beat up tripod that I got for free, so I usually travel with just my kit lenses.Inspiration
My friends and family have been very involved with my photography since I started getting more serious with it. After seeing some of my sunset shots I was uploading on social media, my nephew was eager to see one for himself, so I took him along with me one evening not knowing what was in store. I was unsure if anything would come of the sky that night because it had been overcast skies for most of the day. Little did my nephew or I know that the sky would light up the way it did, which to this day remains one of my favorite sunsets.Editing
I don't spend a lot of time post-processing my photos. I usually at the most spend around 15 minutes working the contrast, exposure, and shadows. I do my best to make the image as close as possible to what I saw with my own eyes.In my camera bag
My bag only consist of a few things. I only have my Rebel T5i and the two kit lens it came with which are a 18-55mm lens and a 55-250mm lens. Besides that I will sometimes carry my tripod and remote shutter along with me if I am shooting any moving water or at night.Feedback
The best advice I could give to others would be that you need to be consistent and patient. The sunsets where I live are always different, and you never quite know what you are going to get for a shot. You just have to continue to chase the light and be patient. Don't head off just because the sun dipped behind the horizon, because usually the best light comes when the sun is over the horizon.
