Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Lake Hauroko in Fiordland National Park, South Island, New Zealand

Time

It was taken on January 6th, 2016 6:20 PM during our summer vacation while tripping around in our camper van.

Lighting

This was taken at sunset just as the sun had dipped below the mountains in the distance. The sky was a little muddy to begin with and wasn't expecting much, but as the sun dropped the clouds lit up and turned a fiery orange.

Equipment

This was shot on a Nikon D5300 with Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 lens with Haida 100mm 6 stop ND grad and 3 stop soft grad filter and a Vanguard Alta Pro tripod.

Inspiration

I had seen images from this jetty and wanted to take my own image so we made this an overnight camp destination. The Lake is approx. 25km of gravel roads off the main road.

Editing

I use Lightroom for post-processing and try and keep my processing to a minimal. I have corrected white balance and brought out the shadows of the jetty and a subtle curves adjustment to bring out some contrast.

In my camera bag

My go to Landscape gear is my Nikon D7200 and Tamron 17-50mm f2.8. It might not be the widest lens out their but is very versatile on a crop sensor body and also my Tamron 70-300mm. A must is also my Haida 100mm filter system, I have a 3, 6 & 10 stop ND, 3 stop soft grad and circular polarizer.

Feedback

I have only taken up photography less than 2 years ago so am still learning a lot of techniques all the time! Probably my best advise is to take your time at a location before you take an image and don't be afraid to post on social media or enter competitions, it's the best way to get honest feedback.
