This was a senior's photo session and we were shooting lifestyle images in small downtown Broken Arrow, OK. I loved her shoes and knew I wanted to do something with them and then we happened upon this bench. It was the perfect match.Time
I usually do my outdoor sessions about an hour before sunset. This was taken in the fall and was around 5 or 6pm.Lighting
As we walked around downtown, there were a lot of areas with sunlight, but we found this bench under the shade of the overhangs from the local shops, so it doesn't have that golden hour look. But I actually like the shade tones to it because it keeps to the true red, white and blue. I used all natural light for this.Equipment
For portraits, I generally use my 50mm 1.8 lens. If I'm using available light, it gives me more latitude for light. I shoot on a Canon 5D Mark iii and generally go handheld. This one was handheld. No flash on this.Inspiration
This one was all about the colors and the All-American shoes. They just seem to go together.Editing
Not really. I brightened it a little and cropped it, but it's pretty much SOOC.In my camera bag
I carry my 5D iii body, a 70-200mm 2.8, a 50mm 1.8, a 24-105 4-5.6, and a 70-300mm kit lens. I also have a canon 430X flash with a Gary Fong flash diffuser. And I always have my reflectors nearby for natural light.Feedback
I tend to go with the flow. My shots are more about the person than anything. I try to capture their style and personality. This was totally this senior...laid back, all-American. Whenever I shoot lifestyle type sessions, I don't plan my shots. We walk around, and I look for interesting textures and colors that compliment what my subject is wearing. I think about who they are and what they like and try to incorporate that into the process. My style of photography is not the art of posing, but rather the art of living. I capture the essence of a person and look for the in between moments where their soul peeks out from within. To me, that's what makes a portrait come alive.
