Location
I live in a small town on the east coast of Iceland, called Neskaupstadur.. If i see the northern lights i go out, dont care about lack of sleep, or how cold it is..I have to go out.. Blanket, maybe a chair to sit in, and some hot chocolate is often part of my equipment... And my dog,a black lab..She always comes with me on new adventures, and loves it. That particular night, i was on my way out of town, to higher ground with total darkness, but saw some activity above, so i stopped at the grocery store and parked my car. Less then a minute after i had set my gear up, the sky just popped in pinks, purples, blues and greens... Breathtakingly beautiful.. Not a person in sight, and total silence..Time
It was just around midnight when i went out and got this one.. on a weekday, so the town was pretty much somewhere in dreamland..Me too, but wide awake sipping my hot chocolate and enjoying the show.Lighting
Nothing special really, i thought the light pollution would be to much and ruin the photo, but it all worked out in my opinion..Equipment
My camera, Canon eos 700D, tripod, 15mm Canon lens, and a remote.Inspiration
Although being an Icelander, and very used to watching the nightsky for shows like this.. It just never gets old. I sometimes take my kids with me, and we lay on the ground in total calmness, no stress, or anything.. Peaceful... I am thankful that i have not lost the kid in my this way, I still enjoy this like every night is the first time i see the northern lights...Editing
Just a little bit of cropping, that is it.In my camera bag
2 extra batteries, 2 SD-cards, remote control, 2-3 lenses, cloth to wipe dust or fingerprints off my lenses, my camera of course, and perhaps some notes i have found on what settings to use..Feedback
For aurora-hunting... Tripod is a must i think,, and a remote.. i love using my fisheye lens, rather than 18-55mm, more to catch of the surroundings. Other than that,,, patience, warm clothing, maybe a blanket to wrap around you, because you will get cold, standing still perhaps for hours.. So gear up, and see you in Iceland :)
