I took this picture on Lake Mendota in Madison, WI

Time

This was the middle of the afternoon.

Lighting

It was slightly overcast that afternoon, but moments before I photographed this, the sun came out and highlighted my best friend/dog!

Equipment

Canon 5D Mark III, Canon 70-200mm f/2.8 II, plus a yummy dog treat!

Inspiration

I wanted to photograph my dog in his "happy place". Birkie loves to run!!! I love his red coat and boots, and they really pop this image. To make this capture, I put my camera on high speed continuos drive with auto tracking for focus and got low to the ground. Then I called out, "Birkie, TREAT!!!" and started shooting as he came barreling towards me with a huge grin on his face.

Editing

Just basic curves and slight sharpening. I also cropped in a bit.

In my camera bag

I am known as a load warrior-ess. For landscapes, I carry 2 camera bodies, a Zeis 15mm, Canon 24 TSE, Zeis 50mm, Canon 85mm, Canon70-200mm, 1.2 extender and 2x extender. For floral work, I carry 2 camera bodies (EOS 5D SR), Zeis 50mm macro, Canon 100mm macro and Canon 180 macro. I always carry 2 cable releases as well and 4 extra batteries.

Feedback

Make a wide path so you don't get your footprints in the image! Get low, down to the dog's eye level. Put your motor drive on high speed continuous. Shutter speed 500 to freeze the action, and overexpose by 1 stop. Have fun, and don't forget the dog treats!
