Location
This picture was taken at my home in Singapore. I have a pond with water plants. Birds, particularly the Olive-backed sunbirds come out to feed on the flowers of this Thalia geniculata, a plant growing in my pond.Time
This picture was taken about 3 ton 4 pm on November 2015.Lighting
The light at this time comes from behind me at a high angle, and is ideal for lighting up the subject.Equipment
I used a Leica V-Lux 4 model, f /3.2; 1/800 sec; ISO 250. Focal length 108/1.No flash. Camera was handheld.Inspiration
Birds are one of my favourite subjects. There are many varieties in my garden, so it's right for me.Editing
This was shot in jpeg. It was in the days before I started shooting in RAW format. There's minimal post processing as the camera has done it all.In my camera bag
I don't carry much. Normally just equipment to dust and clean the lens, a small bottle of water spray and with this model of Leica, no other lenses as it's a compact camera.Feedback
Know your subjects so that you can anticipate their movements. I have seen the sunbirds feed on the flowers here, and was standing in position with the camera ready. Take a few test shots to see if your exposure is right. For action shots where there is much movement, try to shoot at the highest shutter speed possible at the lowest ISO setting to avoid noise in the final picture. Shoot in continuous focus setting, and with multiple frames. And have lots and lots of patience!
