Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Moses Cone Park, right off of the Blue Ridge Parkway in Boone NC.

Time

I took this shot in the morning just before 8 am. There was mist still coming off the water in the distance.

Lighting

Here I wanted to use only natural light for this image. The sun was just creeping up over the horizon in the distance, producing a nice gold color that started to show in the foreground.

Equipment

For this shot I was on a Manfrotto Be Free tripod with my Sony a6000. The lens I used was the Sony 10-18mm landscape lens, with no flash.

Inspiration

My wife and I were hiking the trails around the park, and as soon as we rounded the corner the scene hit me. The way the sun was introducing itself through the trees, casting gold colors on the yellow leaves of the path, was a scene I couldn't pass up on.

Editing

I did post processing in Lightroom. I actually didn't do a terrible about of post processing with this shot. I lowered the highlights and brought up some of the light in the shadows. To give it a pinch of drama I did a small dark vignette on the boarders, and brightened the path of golden leaves.

In my camera bag

I don't carry too much in my bag to be honest. I have 1 lens for Landscape shots(Sony 10-18mm), and 1 lens for portraits Sony Zeiss 55mm F1.8. Other than that I carry some polarizing filters, and a remote for the camera in case I'm taking long exposures.

Feedback

The best advice I could give is to just "be there!" When you're in beautiful places like this park and other areas surrounding the Blue Ridge Parkway, the shots pretty much set themselves up. Hard to take bad shots when you're surrounded by natures beauty. Also as I'm sure you all know, be there early, or be there late. You get the best results/colors when the sun is rising or setting.
