Location
This photo was taken in a hidden little area in Yorkey's Knob in Cairns. It's a great little spot that get's lit up beautifully at golden hour.Time
This image was taken at my favourite time of day, around 5pm when the Golden hour was really getting going. The light was shining through the trees and naturally backlighting the model.Lighting
The lighting was amazing to create a feel that drags you into the photo. The smoke being lit up by the backlight really helped draw all the details together for this image.Equipment
All that was used for this image was my trusty old sigma 70-300mm and my Nikon D600, the rest is down to natural light and the amazing location.Inspiration
For this photo I was looking for a feel that dragged you into the skull candy magic. I wanted to create something different from my normal style, the makeup created this amazing character that was brought to life through the camera, and he tells his own story in the photo, which is exactly what I wanted to achieve.Editing
With this image there wasn't too much editing done to it, just a couple of curves adjustments and some dodging and burning to make it pop, and obviously a black and white conversion. In my camera bag
Normally in my bag I have my Nikon D600, my Nikon D750, a Sigma art 50mm, my trusty Sigma 70-300, and my Tamron 24-70.Feedback
Pick the right location at the right time, work out what story you would like the image to tell. Give it a go and have fun with it. Also make sure that the model being used has a clear idea of what you are trying to achieve. I work with an amazing team, and if not for the incredible make up from my amazing make up artist (Makeup Artistry Cairns), I wouldn't have been able to create this image. To obtain something similar, make sure you can back light your subject and that your team has a clear idea of what you are after, then just watch the magic happen.
