Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in a small town called Slab City in Southern California. I am a self taught photographer so every photo I take is a new experience for me.

Time

This is truly one of my favorite shots from this trip. My father and I took a trip to Slab City and as we where leaving the town late afternoon at about 4pm I saw this beautiful view and most of the time if I am in the car and I see an amazing view I ask the driver to slow down while I try to take the picture because but this one was way to amazing to try and wing it so I had my father stop the car and I am glad I did.

Lighting

I wanted this shot to show how old, fragile and forgotten this town was but in such a beautiful way that's is like finding a new gem.

Equipment

This was shot on a point and shoot Kodak that was gifted to me about three Christmases ago. Like I said I am a self taught photographer so I learn to shoot with whatever I have and I am still working my way up to better and new photos and cameras.

Inspiration

Just the simplicity of this beautiful place like I said it was kind of a whim shot. I was the view and wanted to capture it with my camera it's more like the photo inspired me.

Editing

I wanted to show every aspect of the land from the sky to the bottles sitting in the ground. I played with the contrast, brightness and shadows many times till I wanted it to be just right. Again I am self taught so I am still learning how to process and develop my photos so it's nothing too technical with my photos.

In my camera bag

I always have my ride or die camera that has helped me with my process of learning photography and that is my Kodak Pixpro AZ251 and my one and only film camera my Mamiya/Sekor 1000DTL with a 55 mm lens.

Feedback

If you have ever seen the movie or read the book Into the Wild you have heard of Slab Citly (trust me) it has its own characters and it's strange but the desert has some amazing view and you can find any kind of gem in this crazy town located in Southern California minutes away from Mexicali salvation mountain is also located within proximity of Slab City and that too is worth seeing. Do your research before going learn about the history of these place and really any other places you plan on shooting at because something may surprise you and make you appreciate it that much more. And always shoot on whatever kind of gear you have, it doesn't matter the gear you have it matters how and who it taking the picture. You could have the best gear but the crap photos it's all about learning to use what you have and no what you have.
