Location
I took this photo in at a marina in Ginowan, Okinawa, Japan. It’s one of my favourite parts of the city, where I currently live.Time
This was taken around 5pm in the winter. Okinawa’s winter is mostly cloudy, and the sun rarely appears. I was on the way home by biking and saw some sunlight coming through between clouds over the marina. I pulled out a camera from my backpack to take some shots.Lighting
As I mentioned above, it’s hard to get nice natural lighting in gloomy weather during the Okinawan winter. Although the sky part was spectacular, it was flat on the ground. So I decided to shoot in HDR.Equipment
I shot this image with a Panasonic Lumix GH3 and Lumix 12-35mm f2.8. Beacuse I wasn't carrying a tripod, I shot 7 brackets in handheld.Inspiration
The nature itself was my inspiration. I wasn’t looking for anything particular at least consiously. Okinawa is a really beautiful place. Photo opportunities are everywhere. I try to keep my eyes on my surroundings all the time. Even when I don’t have a camera, I look around to find photo worthy moments to train my vision.Editing
I used Photomatix Pro for tonemapping and photoshop. Also, I applied Topaz Adjust to mainly enhance clarity. In my camera bag
Since I’m a filmmaker, I generally pack Panasonic Lumix GH4 and Lumix 12-35mm f2.8 and 35-100mm f2.8. For prime lenses, I use Nikkor 20mm f2.8D and 50mm f1.8D lenses with a lens adaptor. Sometime, I use my old Pentax-M 28mm f2.8 for fun. It’s very easy to use with GH4.Feedback
Okinawa is a really photogenic place. I’m very fortunate to live here. To capture good moments, it’s just to keep your eyes wide-open. Also, better to know your camera and every function of it. So you will know what to do when opportunities come.
