Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken on the lakefront in Chicago off of Belmont Harbour in the early morning.

Time

It was about 7 to 7:30.

Lighting

As the final product shows the lighting was all I needed, but I thought I had time to take multiple shots and again that wasn't the case. the sun seemed to rise so fast i only got off about four frames while brackting for the best shot. No tripod, had tp shoot thru the fence (beach wasn't open yet) so did my best to hold it slow and steady, This was with my film camera not digital too.

Equipment

My Nikon F100.. slide film 100 speed, so I had no idea just how good it was going to be, Was over the moon when I saw the slide for the first time, I was very impressed with myself for awhile, and I mean short while, Shot another roll that I literally made the classsic blunder of thinking I rewound the sedond roll and surprise.... I open the back and I didn't hit the rewind button, destroyed that roll, I learned a valuable lesson that day in not letting my ego getnin the way again.

Inspiration

Was going to Columbia College in Chicago at the time and the assignment at the time was just go and shoot what you love. Pretty simple choice for me, just headed down to the lakefront. Spent about 5 hours there.Love scenics and landscapes like forever. Some people can look at same phot and feel nothing, but to me it is almost a spiritual journey at tims. I put in my earbuds put on some classical music and it trasforms me to another place and time,

Editing

No post processing. Slide film, glad i used the slide film helped enrich the color and contrast .

In my camera bag

presently I have a Nikon D700 digital camera, with the standard 55mm lens, a 80 to 200mm auto focus lenses. I still use my film camera too. a Nikon F100 film camera when I want to go back in time to challange myself. A dedicated flash for both cameras. A couple neutral -density filters, some good old black and white film, 400 speed, plenty of batteries and 2 charging packs for the cameras.

Feedback

I had one of the best instructors on the planet at Columbia College in John H. White a pulitzer winning photographer. somehow he managed to inspire our class to want and go out right after class and start shootig. And I mind you the class wasn't over until 10:30 at night. he had a simple pholisphy of most times nature will give you good days to show your talent, but on the days when god gives you nothing lemons, shoot lemonade.
