Behind The Lens

Location

Funny enough it was in my doorway with a black background

Time

Mid morning around 11am

Lighting

I made sure the door was completely open i had a 2/3 glass door to ensure as much natural light as possible. I propped up a grey Boppy under a boppy louger i order to turn my baby toward the camera

Equipment

I used a cannon rebel t4i with an ef 85mm f/1.8 cannon lens also a YONGNUO speedlite master

Inspiration

My husband is a police officer at this time there had been an enormous amount of police officer deaths due to shootings of officers on and off duty. The political climate was such that even though officers were being murdered the public view was that all police officers were bad humans and deserved it. The reality is that the actions of a few were and still are dictating the perception of police for the many. The truth was and is most officers are fantastic wonderful people who are just trying to do a job because they have an overwhelming sense of duty to help serve and love their community. Few people understand that when an officer puts on the badge their entire family has to also wear that badge. We have to send him out every day and these days the very real reality is that he may not come home. I wanted people to see there is more to my husband then a badge he’s a father, he’s a son, he’s a husband and so much more. I wanted them to see behind that badge was an innocent son who didn’t deserve the hate being thrown upon his daddy’s and his shoulders. To see the humanity in all people is the key to all understanding. That simple truth was what i wanted to relay.

Editing

Yes i used light room to do some post processing. I decided in order for people to really view his eyes i wanted the photo to be black and white. I also increased the light in the photo along with the contrast to really View the detail.

In my camera bag

My bag is pretty much like Mary Poppins bad. You just keep finding more stuff. I always carry several lenses my go to is the Ed’s 18-135mm but also love a simple 50mm and a few wide angle and macro lenses for good measure.I keep a speed light and since i work mostly with small ones. I modify pez dispensers to stick in my flash slot on my camera i keep probably 10 different ones and let the kids choose which one to look at. It’s always good to keep some noise makers too so you can get babies to look at you when you want their attention..

Feedback

I’m all about keeping it simple and really using your skills and thinking creatively on set to take amazing images. For me it just rings more true and is more raw and real than a lot of post production. Also as you’re learning take gobs and gobs of pictures. Take pictures of everything from every angle imaginable while your building your skills it helps you find your esthetic and voice in your images.when you figure it out really hone those skills and learn how to get those shots with minimal efforts. Photography in my opinion should be a long on going invention. It isn’t something you just do and Learn the skill and keeping doing the same boring stuff. Push your limits constantly, find a new perspective,
