Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at 'Birling Gap'. Sussex, in southern England, it was my first visit.

Time

The sun had set below the horizon, giving the wonderful glow of colour, at about 7-00pm, as it was early Autumn.

Lighting

I have rarely seen such an after-glow, so I continued snapping, until darkness had almost fallen. I guess I was just lucky to encounter such light on my first visit.

Equipment

I use an Olympus EPL5 compact system camera, with an adapter which accepts four- thirds lenses. This was taken with Zuiko 7-14 lens, on a tripod.

Inspiration

Birling Gap is an inspirational area in itself, and I have returned to it several times since.

Editing

Pictures taken with the 7-14, usually need tonal adjustment, as the bulbous front element prevents the use of any filters, so my 'neutral density', is achieved on the computer. The colours needed very little adjustment. I always shoot in raw so a touch of levels, and a little sharpening is normally required.

In my camera bag

I try to keep the weight to a minimum, so have two micro four-thirds bodies, a fast 12mm prime, 7-14 four thirds zoom lens, (admittedly a monster, but great quality), a 70-300 four thirds zoom, a 50mm macro four thirds prime, and a 12-60 four thirds zoom. Eventually I'd like to have all miniature lenses to lighten the load further! I usually carry a tripod but only use it when light levels are low, as the Olympus image stabilisation works so well.

Feedback

If a place inspires you, keep going back. Plan all you can, as to weather, tide times etc., but go anyway, even if the weather looks awful, conditions can change quickly on the coast, often with unexpected rewards.
