Location
This shot was taken in my back garden! I had picked up the magpie feathers and was struck by the beauty of the iridescence, particularly when wetTime
This was an afternoon shotLighting
A fairly dull day which made it easier to avoid over-exposureEquipment
I used an Olympus TG-1 on super-macro (with LED light) settingInspiration
I loved the way the feathers of this supposedly black and white bird are in fact beautifully coloured due to iridescence. I love the texture as well as the coloursEditing
Slight lomo effectIn my camera bag
I tend to carry my Nikon D5100 with 55-300mm Nikkor telephoto lens or my Nikon P900 Coolpix most of the time but also have a Nikon J2 with 10-30mm lens for wider angle shots. I have a monopod and tripod but don't often use them. I also have filter kits, flash gun and macro gear. I always always carry spare batteries and SD cards. If it's raining I tend to use the Olympus TG-1 as it is waterproof. I also use my Huawei mobile phone if I can't carry a camera!Feedback
Getting right up close to natural textures gives them an almost abstract quality and gives a fresh appreciation of the beauty of nature. Using a macro setting even on a 'point and shoot' can give surprisingly good results, or with a DSLR, I use a wide aperture to isolate the subject and I think like to fill the frame
