Behind The Lens

Location

I was approached by a co-worker who asked if I would help her daughter, since she knew that I had been doing some B&W photography. Her daughter had been doing some fashion work for several of the large regional department stores and wanted to build up her portfolio. I explained that I didn't know much about fashion photography, since I mostly did landscapes, but she insisted, so I agreed. We set up a small studio in the lobby of the business after hours.

Time

The shoot lasted from 6pm until 8 pm. All lighting was from 4 Paul Buff White Lightning 5000's, the background was a white paper backdrop. I should add that the shoot took place in November 2000.

Lighting

The 4 5000's were set with 2 on the background and 2 in front of the model, all with white shoot-through umbrellas. I adjusted the power of each light to the proper value using a light meter.

Equipment

During the shoot I used a Canon EOS 1N 35mm camera as well as a Mamiya C-220 2-1/4 medium format. I shot 6 rolls of 35 and 4 rolls of 120 Ilford FP4 film and developed it in PMK Pyro developer. I mostly shot from a tripod, put a couple of rolls were shot freehand.

Inspiration

The young lady was a joy to work with giving me numerous looks as we went through the session. This particular shot was one of the best and I loved the mood it projected.

Editing

The original images from the session were printed on Ilford Multigrade paper and given to the girl for her portfolio. In 2015, I decided to begin scanning in many of my original negatives, and this shoot was one of the first. It was scanned on an Epson V-750 scanner, opened into Photoshop where I attempted to match the original silver print as closely as possible in tone, exposure and contrast. Other than that nothing else was done to the TIFF file.

In my camera bag

I currently carry a Canon 5D MkIII and a Canon 40D (backup), 24-70 f2.8L lens, 80-200l 2.8L lens, and a 24mm TS lens. In addition, I carry an old Bogan tripod, a shutter release, an old Minolta spot meter and a bottle of water. Keep in mind I am usually shooting landscapes.

Feedback

Please remember that lighting is everything. In the case of a studio shoot, you must have it balanced out. I use Ansel Adams' Zone System to calculate the values that I want in the image, even digital cameras, so that the tonal quality of the image is what I am looking for. Other than that, the best way to learn is to go and shoot.
