This was my first ever real studio experience and I was completely out of my comfort zone. Eric Murphy's Bananastudio was based in Newcastle and for a while he ran workshops with well known photographers as an opportunity for people like me to learn. I signed up for a John Tisbury workshop thinking that we would be spending the day learning how he lit models and working with Iveta Niklova who is pictured here. On the day there were half a dozen nude models there and working with different lighting that John had set up and I was completely out of my comfort zone. I managed to break one of John's modelling lights, and because I moved in to crop this short to mostly torso made the model nervous too. Not an auspicious start but it did produce this fantastic shot!Time
This was probably mid-morning and one of the first set ups I shot on the day so its remarkable that I got anything worthwhile at all - thanks are due to Iveta who naturally produces an continuous stream of great poses and of course to John & Eric.Lighting
This was shot with two strobes onto a white panel behind the model, but she was then flagged off on either side with black flats so that all of the light wrapping round her was reflected and diffused by being bounced from the white panel.Equipment
Pretty sure it was shot with a 5d Mk II and a 24-70 lens aided and abetted by my naivety and inexperience!Inspiration
I wanted to learn about how to use lighting to create shadow and this shot was an extreme example, but I remember this being the first time I saw how a strobe could completely counteract any ambient light. John shot another model on the sofas in the non-studio area and we were all aghast that the background would totally detract from his shot, until we saw it and learnt that he had rendered it completely in shadow.Editing
None really - processed in Lightroom to render the shot in monochrome and a slight adjustment to the cropIn my camera bag
Most of my work is shot when I'm travelling as part of my job so I have a range of lenses from wide to telephoto and a 5d mk III. Apart from the 24-27 I also have a 17-40mm f4 for landscapes and architecture, and a 70-200mm f2.8 that I use for details and people shots. I have a few nd filters in case I have the luxury of time to use a tripod, but that tends to be once a blue moon when I actually have the opportunity to plan a shot rather than react on the hoof.Feedback
The most important advice from this session is the value to inexperienced photographers of working with experts. I didn't need to worry about posing Iveta, she took care of that, and the patience of John and Eric allowed me to feel confident enough to experiment despite my early faux pas!
