This particular shot was taken in a local cocktail bar during the day on a rainy Christchurch afternoon. You can't really tell it was a bar from this shot of course, so you'll have to take my word for it :)Time
Some time in the afternoon. It was part of a set for a few make up artist exam assessments so timings were a little random.Lighting
Making a dark cocktail bar look light and airy presented a little challenge, there are 2 giant reflectors pumping natural light into the background and I'm using a pair of AD200 Godox flashes as my main light.Equipment
This was shot on my favorite lens, a fixed focal length 85mm. This particular combo was a Nikon 750 and their 85mm 1.4G lens.Inspiration
This is one of those shots that comes together on the day. As part of their assessment, the make up artists were creating hairstyles as well as make up. We had a few outfits available but the pink baby doll screamed bubble gum along with the makeup and hair styling. A quick trip across the road to grab some bubblegum and we were all set.Editing
Yes, blowing a naturally spherical bubble is tricky so the bubble shape is a combination of 'as shot' and post processed. Some frequency separation on the skin.In my camera bag
These days just a Sony A7iii and a 24-70mm lens. A few accessories like an xrite passport color swatch. If I'm shooting with flash then a pair of AD200 Godox units with strobe bulbs.Feedback
Mixing ambient light with flash and masking it look natural is the key. Getting your ambient exposure correct first then dialing in your flash power is how I usually do it. With a bit of practice and experience it should only take a few shots to get your lighting ratios spot on.
