After the 1896 fires, J.S. Neall set up his assay office on the first floor of the building. Neall's "sampling works" were set up in the back room of the building.
The Reed Investment Company leased office space on the upper floors. Verner's Z. Reed business reputation was forged after he put together the Portland Gold Mining Company - the Districts richest holdings - and arranged the transfer of Winfield Scott Stratton's remarkable Independence Mine to the London Venture Corporation. He went to play a significant role - along with John D. Rockefeller Jr. - in developing Wyoming's Salt Creek oil fields.
As secretary of the Reed Investment Company, Oliver H. Shoup met and worked with many men of influence: Rockefeller, A.E. Carlton, and others. With their powerful names backing him, Shoup won the Colorado Governor's seat in 1919.
