Location
This was taken in Urbana, Ohio. In the past few years, we have had a positive change in the population growth of the American Bald Eagle in my part of Ohio. It was always one of my goals to capture one of these majestic birds in the wild. I just happen to be out walking one day taking nature photos and this beautiful bird gave me the opportunity I had been looking for.Time
This was taken in the afternoon. We had a lot of really cloudy and rainy days prior, but this day the sun was shining and not a cloud in the sky.Lighting
I am a nature photographer so lighting is always key but not something you can always control. Luckily I caught this one going towards the sun so the shadows perfectly accent the rest of the image. I have had a lot of good shots with bad lighting. When it comes to nature photography, it is the proverbial, "nature of the beast." It is hard to make a wild animal get in the lighting you want it in. Just take a lot of shots and play with your editing. Sometimes you get lucky and everything lines up perfectly.Equipment
I used my Cannon Rebel T3 with my 75mm-300mm zoom lens. No tripod used at all. When I am out taking pictures of nature, things move so fast and are so unpredictable that I just capture what I can holding the camera. Sometimes I get lucky, sometimes I don't. This happened to be a good day.Inspiration
It was one of my "bucket list" things I wanted to see and photograph. I have always loved the Bald Eagle but I had really only seen them in captivity. I wanted so badly to see one flying free and luckily, here in Ohio, the population has been growing and expanding over the last few years.Editing
I used Photoshop and Lightroom to post edit after I used my regular software. I am one that really likes to not use them usually and if you look at most of my photos, I am HUGE on the color and usually put my saturation on the highest setting when editing. It's kinda how my style is. However, with this magnificent bird being a lifelong dream to capture, I wanted it to look perfect. In my camera bag
I now have a Canon Rebel T5 and I always have my standard lens, my 75-300MM zoom lens and I also have a 500MM telephoto zoom lens I carry that I have equipped with a 2X magnifying lens attachment. I usually only use that lens when I am using a tripod and do things like photographing the moon or something far away that is stationary. The lens I use the most has to be my 75-300mm zoom lens when it comes to nature photography.Feedback
To be honest, when I go out taking nature photography, I use the sports setting. It allows me to take them in rapid succession and get more photos. In nature photography, everything that moves is totally unpredictable and if you blink, you are going to miss something. I have gone out to a local nature preserve and come home with nearly 200 photos taken of 3-4 subjects.
