June 2014. Nikon Coolpix S01. I had the opportunity to travel to VA Beach for work. And even though I was exhausted, I was determined to get up early and capture my first sunrise of the summer at the beach. Capture was at 6:06am. It was a beautiful and serene moment, with the beach littered with photographers and their cameras- and we were not disappointed at the weather and the sky.

I was lucky to be traveling through Virginia Beach for work and got to stay over night within walking distance to the beach. I’m not usually an earlier riser, but when near the ocean, the dawn calls to me. There is something so peaceful and majestic about watching the sun rise up, as if waking from the ocean floor. I had checked the weather forecast for the morning, and I was in luck, not one storm cloud would be in the sky. I was up at 5am, grabbed my gear & and a cup of hotel coffee, and hit the sand. When the sun started to crest over the horizon, I was able to center myself and camera perfectly to capture that golden light fill the sky. June 2014, 6:06am.Lighting
I wanted to ensure I captured the glow, the orange light dance across the waves and sand. That is when the sunlight has this warm embrace of the beach. Like a hug ‘Good Morning.’Equipment

It was the beginning of summer. We crested over Memorial Day weekend, and I hadn’t been able to be at the beach. My work had me traveling through Virginia’s core, and I was lucky enough to get a call to direct me over to the Naval Bases in Norfolk. I so craved the sound of the ocean, the sand between my toes, and a sunrise on the horizon. That to me, is the epitome of summer life growing up in Maryland and driving down to the shore every weekend. If I was only going to have a night at the beach, I wasn’t going to miss that East Coast Sunrise for any reason.Editing
I did minimum post-processing as I love to share in real time the images that I’ve captured. I enhance saturation slightly to deepen the glow.In my camera bag
Along with my Nikon Coolpix S01, I have added to my gear bag a Canon EOS 60D, and a Canon EOS M50.Feedback
Always check the weather radar so you won’t be disappointed with cloud cover when capturing sunrises and sunsets. Ensure you look at all aspects of the radar, they can give you visual on cloud movement in a storm system is tracking through your area for the night/day. Don’t assume some clouds will ruin your shot- they will actually enhance the mood depending on their pattern and movement. As you can see in my photo, there were Cirrus Clouds present. Clouds can assist in reflecting the light and enhancing the color play in the sky. Also, set five alarms if you are not normally an early bird. Get to the beach 30mins prior to estimated sunrise. The sunrise won’t wait for you.
