Location
I took this shot from the bridge overlooking the River Ouse in the centre of Bedford in the UK on Boxing Day last year. The river was flooding and had broken its banks behind me but was flowing slower on this huge bend as it ran past the law courts.Time
This was late afternoon on Boxing Day as the sun was low in the sky.Lighting
The winter late afternoon sun wasn't far from setting, so was soft and golden shining on the red sandstone brick of the buildings.Equipment
I used my Canon 6D with a Canon 24-105mm lens that I had bought only a couple of weeks before.Inspiration
We had finished walking along the flooded river and over the bridge and as I looked up river across the road I saw the buildings in the afternoon winter sun. I ran across the road to get a shot and then saw the reflections in the river as well which I absolutely loved as they curved back round the huge bend in the river.Editing
Yes, I knew when I took the shot this would look great in monochrome with the contrast and reflections on the water. I converted it to monochrome using Nik Software's Silver Efex Pro 2, adding some contrast and bringing out the detail. But as these are Law Courts I thought it best to remove the building alarm and CCTV cameras from the end of the building as it ruined the context if the shot!In my camera bag
My Canon 6D and Canon 24-105mm lens with 50mm f1.4 and 85mm f/1.8 prime lenses, my Yongnuo yn-562 mkiii flashes and my new Lowel GL-1 Power LED light I recently bought and used at a wedding for the first time a month ago.Feedback
I love to shoot monochrome so am always on the lookout for shots that will look great when converted. Lines, shadows, shots where contrast will be apparent, especially in architecture. When you are composing your shot, visualise it in black and white. What will stand out, will the focus of the subject matter be different once it's monochrome and what sort of atmosphere will the shot have.
