Captured this beautiful Emu as it was warning me off getting too close. Loved the detail in the image.

Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Paradise Park Zoological Gardens in Herts.

Time

This was taken on a summers day.

Lighting

This was a bright and sunny day with the sun right overhead, so it was difficult to get a shot that was carefully exposed, I decided to use bokeh setting to blur the background and provide a clear fore image.

Equipment

Canon 400D SLR with a 55mm lens

Inspiration

This was a summers day when I took my then very young children to enjoy the park and see some the animals up close and personal. This was the emu enclosure, which was a large fenced enclosure that was about 2 metres high, where the emus were still able to interact with the visitors. They are wild birds but friendly and engaging. As we passed, this one was squawking and my husband remarked that it appeared to be talking to us. I fired off a couple of shots using my Canon 400D SLR, which was new at the time and I had taken it to get used to the camera. This was the result. I loved this shot.

Editing

I used Lightroom to balance the brightness and contrast.

In my camera bag

I normally have my Canon G7X point and shoot in my bag, and often return with my DSLR to recompose some of the shots that I have seen and liked. I often shoot architecture and landscapes, so my foray into Animals was a first.

Feedback

Always be prepared to just snap if you get to a moment where the object presents itself. I do carefully compose some images, but, often find the spontaneous shots are the best especially when its animals.
