Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken along the north shore of Lake Ontario, in Kingston, Ontario, Canada. I was driving with my then 2 year old daughter, on our way to a local park, when I noticed the clouds in the sky were opening up over the lake. I immediately pulled to the side of the road and grabbed my camera, knowing that I only had moments before the cloud cover would change. Luckily, I was able to get the shot I wanted to.

Time

If I recall correctly, I took the photo mid afternoon.

Lighting

It's all about mother nature providing the right conditions, and having the awareness to recognize when she is giving you that perfect moment to capture.

Equipment

I used a Fujifilm XA1 camera, with a FUJINON XC16-50mm F3.5-5.6 OIS lens. Mother nature provided the lighting, and I provided the steady hands.

Inspiration

Balance. Finding the right balance of work and play, family and friends, yard work and fishing...you get the idea.

Editing

I ran the photo through Fujifilm's My Fine Pix Studio, and just tweaked the color, contrast, and brightness just slightly...I have no idea how to Photoshop.

In my camera bag

Since I'm still pretty new to the photography game, it's pretty simple. My Fujifilm X-A1 and lens, UV filter, and an extra battery with charger. There's some pretty cool stuff out there I'd love to get, but this can be a pricey hobby. And Santa hasn't dropped off anything from my wishlist.

Feedback

Slow down. If you're going to fast trying to get someplace (whether on the road or life in general) , people are often too focused on point B, oblivious to what was between point A and B. When you slow down, you'll actually see more of the peripherals around you and there could be a fantastic shot you otherwise would have missed. Oh, and keep your camera with you, even when you don't plan on using it. Better to have it handy, than not have it and miss any opportunities (made this mistake too many times). It's kinda like that hockey saying, "keep your stick on the ice" (cuz you'll never score if you miss 100% of the shots).
