Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was captured in Twillingate, Newfoundland, Canada during a 2-week trip my wife and I took both our mothers on to experience the beauty of the province that is known as The Rock.

Time

In June, Twillingate gets this golden glow just around 8pm. We were walking along a 5km beach that extends to a 100 foot cliff.

Lighting

From the beach, there was too much water as an open sea to capture the reflective golden purple hue. There was this mini-island of rock with tuffs of grass that I had to jump to and crouch to capture the lighting. I tried different angles of where the center of the image was looking to capture the lighting without completely washing the picture due to the direct sunlight. It took a few tries and I'm glad I experimented because within 2 minutes the lighting was lost as the sun faded in the distance

Equipment

This shot was completely freehand with a 24-70mm lens.

Inspiration

The lighting. All the colors of reflective lighting against the dark blue ocean, the color of the rocks, the bit of green of the grass and the powerful yellow orange of the sunlight at that time of day was a momentous occasion given I do not live near an ocean and wouldn't have the opportunity perhaps ever again. This photo captures and expresses exactly the sheer overwhelming sense of appreciation for our beautiful world.

Editing

Funny and scary story about this... I don't remember how exactly but all images from our trip got erased from the memory card. My heart stopped when I attempted to download a week's worth of images to my laptop. I scrambled to find data restoring software that worked with memory cards and to my great relief, was able to fully restore all images. Once restored, I quickly used Lightroom to add a little of contrast, play with the histogram to get the right balance of dark's and added slight saturation to get the colors to represent what my eye experienced.

In my camera bag

Always the Nikon D800 body and depending on my vision of the day, likely my 70-200mm and the 24-70mm. When I expect to be snapping pictures of people, I almost only use Nikon Nikkor AF 50mm f / 1.4D Lens for the softness of the skin texture that doesn't require me to be in someones face.

Feedback

Although it is possible to capture great moments with a single lens, you might not have the ability to position yourself where you need to be physically to capture the image. Having different lenses makes it possible to snap the shot someone may not be able to recreate because they can't physically be where the lens is framing the shot. Experimenting with framing can give the viewer a unique perspective as what you don't see part of this frame is the vast ocean which would dwarf the small rocky island. Many of my memorable captures were created from stepping off the path as well.
