Behind The Lens

Location

This photograph was taken in St George's Market in Belfast. They are two of the regular stall holders and are true Belfast characters. The twinkle in his eye says everything you need to know about the nature of a Belfast gentleman.

Time

It was taken at around midday at a rare quiet moment n the middle of the usual hustle, bustle, and bargaining.

Lighting

The scene is naturally is from the covered market glass roof and ot offered a huge softbox to light the couple. I asked them to look slightly to light their faces.

Equipment

The camera was handheld and was a Nikon D3100 with a Tamron 10-24. Nothing more than that.

Inspiration

I am a regular at the market on a weekend and would often chat to the stall holders. One day I had my camera with me and we were enjoying a great bit of banter so I asked if I could take their photo. They were more than happy and I promised to give them copies.

Editing

I always approach my portraits with a very light touch approach to processing. Generally I adjusted the levels and cleaned up the background a bit. Then converted to mono and added a bit of dodge and burn.

In my camera bag

I now have a D750 and my 16-35 f/4 is usually "glued" to it. I take a lot of landscape and architectural images. I would als have a Nikon 70-200 f/4 and a 24-70 f/2.8 for specific uses but I tend not to carry my whole kit at one the. In addition I don't usually go out without my Giottos tripod with my Manfrotto ball head.

Feedback

The best advice I would give for anyone wanting to capture a shot like this is to talk to your subject. There is no way they would have been this relaxed if we had not been chatting beforehand.
