Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken in a friend's studio in Mojacar, Andalucia, Spain. The model, Pamela, was fairly new to modelling and this was my second session with her. Pamela is French but lives in Spain; she speaks French and Spanish, I speak only English. She's great fun to work with and our mixture of FrancoSpanglish only added to the joy of the shoot.

Time

The shoot took place between the hours of 2pm to 5pm. The reason being all the Spanish are at lunch and, with the studio being located in a shopping centre, that meant we had plenty of car parking space available!

Lighting

Two studio lights were used, a main (key) light and another to fill-in the shadows. We ended up with only one catchlight in the eyes more by luck than judgement I think!

Equipment

The camera used was a Nikon D7000 with an 18-140mm lens set at f5.7 and a focal length of 100mm (which translates to 150mm equivalent becuase of the crop factor with the camera). The lens aperture was chosen mainly to give a good exposure but also a reasonably shallow depth of field.

Inspiration

Pamela is not only a very beautiful model but she is a natural in front of the camera. It's hard to believe she had modelled only a few times before because she was so relaxed, and she brings her own ideas to the shoot as well. I wanted a shot that not only showed her beauty but also emphasised her gorgeous eyes as well as capturing how at ease she was.

Editing

Originally I processed the shot in Portrait Pro, which is excellent for removing skin blemishes. Then it was simply a matter of sharpening the image.

In my camera bag

I love my D7000. I bought secondhand it as an upgrade for a D200 at about the time the D7100 came out. I prefer to invest my money in good quality lenses rather than having lots of megapixels with the camera body. For me, the 18-140mm (which is my 'go to' lens) is the sharpest Nikon produce from crop sensor cameras. The two together make a great combination for pretty much any shooting situation. However, I also love extreme wide angles so always make sure I have my 8mm full frame fisheye with me. My other absolute necessities are spare batteries and a 10 stop ND filter (I also love long exposures!).

Feedback

For me, there are two golden rules to producing good studio shots. One is to keep the lighting simple and the other is to have a good model, which is not so easy as rule one! It also helps to have a lot of ideas in mind before you start the shoot (the internet is a wonderful source of inspiration, especially Viewbug!). Erm, that's three golden rules then isn't it?
