Behind The Lens

Location

This Portrait of Svetlana was captured in color and converted to Black and White in Lightroom. The Image was taken in a Studio/Basement in July,2009

Time

it was late afternoon about 4 pm

Lighting

For this Image I was using a Westcott Spider Light 5 in a large Apollo Softbox and a white Westcott reflector off to the left to soften any shadows.

Equipment

My Camera at the time was a Nikon D3 set at Native ISO of 200 with a Nikon 24-70 F2.8 lens. set at 60mm. and f11. The Camera was hand held, however a tripod was near by.

Inspiration

Svetlana was a beautiful girl and not a professional model. She was working in the salon where I got my haircut. Her innocent look inspired me to make a clean portrait with very little make-up. I've worked with her several time since then.

Editing

Only some minor skin softening in photoshop was necessary, the conversion to B&W was done in Lightroom with a Plug-in

In my camera bag

Currently I use a Nikon D800 and D600. I have several Nikon lens, the 70-200 VR I f2.8, 24-70 F2.8, 105 Macro Vr f2.8 and the 14-24 F2.8. My Tripod is a Benro Go Travel 2. My main lighting systems are 7 Nikon speedlights, SB 800, 900 and 910's fired by Phottix Radio remotes. My lighting modifiers are Westcott Rapid boxes most of the time, however I recently added some MagMods. I also use a Cam-Ranger to fire tethered to my iPad when shooting inside. Over 99% of my work is done on location. I use my 105mm Macro for Portraits as well as Floral images. I have given workshops on Portrait, Beauty, Boudoir, Floral and Pet Photography.

Feedback

The key is to use a large light source close to your subject while having your subject 8 to 10 feet from the background. This will produce the softer lighting on your subjects face, while allowing even a white background to go black.
