After two screw ups, I guess it is finally time for me to really join the conversation. This one gets it. The qualities it has are outstanding.

Behind The Lens

Location

I went to beautiful location with one of my photographer friends/student for the sole purpose of capturing the beauty and calmness of Bottle cove in western Newfoundland at sunset.

Time

I wanted to capture this image just before the sun was about to go down, the gorgeous color's that came with it due to the thin layer of clouds just added to the picture.

Lighting

Bottle cove is one of those naturally protected coves, as out in the mouth of the cove, there is a large collection of rocks, that prevent the strong waves and under current from coming in. Because of this, this spot gives me and other photographers the opportunity to capture a wide selection and types of pictures, however when the skies are clean you will always get a Beautiful Sunset

Equipment

Camera Canon T1i Lens Canon ef-s 10-18mm Hoya ND64 filter Vanguard Tripod Canon wired remote Settings: 18mm iso 100 f/22 10 sec.

Inspiration

As I arrived at the beach I saw this beautiful stream that had cut this waive channel out to the cove, As I was looking around I tried taking a few pictures from different angles, but non of them gave me right feeling, This was the last location I tried, it took me a few minutes to set up the picture correctly, as I wanted the right angle, movement in the water ( especially in the stream ) and the right framing of the cliffs on each side of the entrance to the cove.

Editing

I did do a few edits using Adobe Lightroom, the main ones were to remove some highlight(-65) and add contrast (+25) besides removing a a couple of spots/birds that threw the picture off a little due to the long exposure time.

In my camera bag

Since taking this picture I have upgraded my equipment so I now have the following cameras/lenses in my bag. Canon Eos 70D - Canon Eos RP - Canon 70-200mm F/4L - Sigma 24-70 F/2.8 Art - Tokina AT-x Pro 100mm F/2.8 Macro - Laowa FX 15mm F/4 Wide Macro 1:1 Tiltshift. Hoya CIR-Pl Filters, Hoya ND 32 - 64 - 1000 filters, Vanguard ALTA PRO 2 263AGH Tripod, Canon wired remote and 150mm Bellow.

Feedback

To capture pictures like this takes patience, don't be in a rush! if you are intending to go and take Landscape and Sunset pictures, I always follow these steps. only take the equipment you are going to use (Wide angle lenses, filters, tripod, remote) arrive early as it will give you a chance to find different locations to take your pictures from (as most time the first pictures don't turn out as you want) Setting up my shot is the biggest thing, WHY? because I don't do a lot of editing and prefer to use the camera as my tool. So finding the right angle, vertically and horizontally along with ensuring (like I did in this picture) to have the right leading line in the frame (The Stream) After this I find the correct focal point and then read my light meter, to get the correct read I pointed to the left of the sun on the sky. as I didn't want the sun to be over powering. adding the ND 64 just let me increase the shutter speed by 7 full stops, this ensure I got the movement in the stream and the water in the cove. So as I said the most important thing to do is, slow down and see your picture before you take it.
