Behind The Lens

Location

This shot happened on the West Coast of South Island, New Zealand somewhere just before Barrytown which is South of Punakaiki, where the famous pancake rocks and blow hole are.

Time

It was just before midday, I had been traveling on the road for some time and pulled over for a short stop

Lighting

I remember sitting on the beach just admiring the view and the clear skies. I noticed the many types of driftwood along the shore, and how they looked so alive in the sharp vertical sunlight.

Equipment

I began taking random shots with my wee Canon A40 (such a good small camera) able to catch the play of the light on the organic shapes of the driftwood

Inspiration

I had been sitting quietly snapping the odd photo and enjoying the quite moment on the beach, when this seagull flew down and settled on the Pohutukawa stump just alongside were I was sitting, I very slowly and quietly raised my camera to take a shot before it flew on.... to my amazement it seemed to turn and smile, as if to say take the shot will you!!!

Editing

This photo has had no post processing apart from clipping image for aesthetics

In my camera bag

At the time I had no other equipment, just my trusty ol' Canon A40

Feedback

I guess the only advice I would impart is that there are times when the unexpected can happen right beside us, always be ready and never rush that shot. It will surprise you how those impromptu moments show themselves, and if we play in harmony with the moment the image will find itself.
