Behind The Lens
Location
This picture is taken in Leuven, Belgium. A fairy-like town of which 1/3th of it's inhabitants consists out of students.Time
It's shot during a night walk in an attempt to outline the ancient architecture back to life in a playful manner.Lighting
Strictly available light, I wanted to make the picture look as if the lamp was the only source of lighting. In reality, there were several street lights around and behind me, so it was a constant struggle against lens flares.Equipment
Has been shot with my D90 and an allround 18-200mm lens which I mainly use for qucik street photography shots.Inspiration
The picture is part of a larger collection of night pictures in which I have tried to bring the ancient architecture of the town to life.Editing
As it is one of my oldest pictures, I have done next to no post-processing except for playing with contrast and brightness to try and achieve my goal of getting the highlighted lamp to seem as it was the only source of lighting. In my camera bag
Nowadays I hit the road with my D700 equipped with an 85mm 1.8f portrait lens for willing subjects along the way, a 105mm macro lens in the bag coupled with a 28-300 mm allround. Along with it my D90 and it's 18-200mm lens takes care of those sneaky shots that require speed and discretion.Feedback
Don't be afraid to go down low to create some depth in your picture, night shots in cities can transform the place you live in enormously. Any form of additional lighting would take away the magic in this shot. Even with a still like this, you won't get it as you imagined on a first shot, move left, move right, forward and back up and down and if the sun rises, the building's still there when it sets again (hopefully).
