As a nature photographer I took this photo at a small stream near my home in the Fichtelgebirge, Bavaria. It was a normal day. When I saw the leaf I hopped into the stream and got a lot of icy water into my boots.Time
I went out for a walk with the dog early in the morning so it was about 7am when I took the photo. It was the third morning in a row that everything was frozen, but there wasn't any snow yet. So of course it was very cold.Lighting
I wanted this picture to look as cold as it was so the blue water was a perfect background. The only problem was that I had to use a very high ISO because there wasn't hardly enough light.Equipment
I made this picture without a tripod, what was really difficult and it took some attempts until I got a nice picture. I didn't use a flash. To be honest, I hate using flashs, because I think that they create a very cool and unnatural light. The camera was my loved Nikon D800 (I think it is the best camera existing) with a NIKKOR lens.Inspiration
I was inspired by the moment itself. I saw a clear message: "Autumn is over! Now the winter makes the rules." I just liked the way you could see the transition between these two seasons.Editing
No, I didn't do any processing, because I liked the picture as it was. In this special case, I thought that processing would destroy this cold and somehow magic moment. In my camera bag
I always carry my camera around with all my 4 lenses. Sometimes I also carry a tripod and a glass ball with me. Of course in some cases I hide somewhere with special camouflaged clothes and then I sometimes have some stuff like tents with me to cover from the view of wild animals.Feedback
Search for a good place near a stream, at least at a point the water isn't that deep. There should be something hanging in the water that can freeze when the temperature is low enough. And then you have to wait. A tip: you should control the place especially in the morning hours beacause then it is still cold. The ice may melt while the sun is rising.
