Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was take on the rim of Crater Lake in the Crater Lake National Park, Oregon, USA

Time

It was taken in mid afternoon in September

Lighting

I used natural lighting for the initial shot. I was shooting color mode. I then converted it to black and white and manipulated the contrast using Lightroom.

Equipment

I was using an Olympus E620 with a 35-70mm kit lens mounted on a Sunpack tripod. The tree was leaning more than I wanted so I tilted the camera to get the angle you see.

Inspiration

We were exploring the rim area of Crater Lake when I rounded some other trees and sow this. I love shooting textures and this fit that purpose.

Editing

I wanted to see what this would look like in black and white. Always have liked monochrome. Using Lightroom, I converted it from color and manipulated the contrast and lighting.

In my camera bag

I am now using a Nikon D7500 with an assortment of lenses from 35mm to 600mm focal length. A remote flash, circular polarizing and variable neutral density filter are also in the bag. A carbon fiber tripod with a ball head are also included.

Feedback

Don’t let the main attraction blind you to what’s around you. Crater Lake is a fantastic area for photos. Most come for the lake. I was actually standing with my back to the main attraction for this view. Keep your eyes moving. You’ll be surprised at what you’ll find.
