Location
I took this photo in St. Brigid Church in San Francisco. This is a discontinued church yet the chairs, altar and the other church elements where still there. I pick this place because of the eerie and solitude feeling when I saw this place and I said, I wanted to take some photos here.Time
I took this photo in the noon-ish. The stained glasses were well lite and balance. I took it when there are no people around.Lighting
The lighting setup is quite easy. It is only a flash with 360 Spin Light modifier, with clear done and white filler card to bounce the light. It is used to fill the light on me as the subject and to freeze in the composition. Then used slower shutter speed to get more ambient light inside the church.Equipment
I used my to-go camera Nikon 5200, used a tripod (Manfrotto), and my flash with the light modifiers, of course, my remote control because it is a self-portrait and I don't have an assistant that time for me. That's it! Simple and easy!Inspiration
This image is entitled "My Own Church", it is my representation of my religion as a person. It interprets that I am a Catholic, I believe I have God that is more powerful beyond anything else but I don't observe the practices as a religious person. I have my own principles, norms, and belief but still observing a faithful practice.Editing
Yes, I did! of course, it is black and white. But if I clean up some details and removed some distractions, it is very minimal. Then, I convert it into black and white, to look it is timeless and dramatic. I adjust the lighting darker to be moody and more focused on the subject but maintaining some details on the details and elements on the background. Then add black and white compensation (Curve) and sharpen it.In my camera bag
My travel bag is so portable and always ready to go, is composed of my camera, of course, with a zoom lens 18-120 mm sigma for versatility, and my creative lens, Nikon 50 mm prime. A flash, with extra rechargeable batteries and camera batteries. I have also wireless sync for the flash, and remote for distance trigger. Then I have a variable Neutral Density for landscape shots or slow-shutter effect during the day shot. Lastly, my Lenovo yoga tablet, for entertainment and tv series watching during long trips.Feedback
My advice that I can share you is: when you see a place that you wanted to shoot, always walk around first and visualized a good composition in your mind. Then give the emotion you want to capture and deliver that to the audience. Secondly, this image is personal expression and experimentation. Personal projects are a powerful motivation that you can do whatever you want maybe to express an emotion or an idea about yourself or your style or just practicing for the next shoot you will be having. Keep shooting and you will keep getting valuable images!
