Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo on the street of Baguio City while I'm on my way home from a sunrise shoot at Mines View Park.

Time

It was a gloomy morning around 8 am. Good thing I always bring my mini tripod in case I need a low shutter shot and yes it was again helpful in this shot that I want to capture which is the detail of her antique lines.

Lighting

Shooting an old lady is challenging that you have to communicate a good vibe or offer her something for exchange to have her portrait on the direction of lights that you want. All I need here is a good contrast and details of her every lines, so I used an aperture of 9 which is effective in this cloudy morning avoiding a dark shadow and a harsh light on her face.

Equipment

The equipment I used here was my 1st camera and lens in my bag, Canon kiss X3 and a 18-55 kitlens. The tripod I used here is the only loyal passenger in my bag. I didn't have Flash or other gadgets that time.

Inspiration

Her face reminds me of my grandmother. Her headband and her tobacco also halted me to take this shot making this photo as my 1st antique people shot in my album to be transferred into acrylic on canvas. One more thing that inspired me to take this shot is the challenge to convince old people to grant your request to have their portrait.

Editing

I always use ACDsee for my post-processing. In this photo I converted it 1st to black and white and used the brush tool to select her face and some part, then I used sepia and brush tool to select her headband, dress and some part. Then I played with lighting, contrast and dodge and burn, lastly I increased its sharpness and a little of noise reducton.

In my camera bag

I normally bring my 60D which i feel its about to retire with all these weddings, landscapes and street photography that it serves. My favorite lens that is always connected is my 17-50 2.8 tamron lens and in the pockets are canon 50 mm 1.8 and Tamron 18-270 mm. And of course I will not forget my mini tripod for emergency purposes.

Feedback

If you found your subject, make sure to set your right settings or exposure first before trying to ask for a portrait to avoid your subject waiting for you tuning up your equipment. When you are set with your tripod and the framing, try talking to her while your finger is ready to fire anytime you got a good emotion just like doing the job of a second shooter because sometimes when you are ready to shoot, the right emotion is not there. Then zoom in your shot to make sure that it is sharp because sometimes we forget that we disabled the auto focus when we did a landscape shoot. And my last advice is to use slow multiple shot to capture more selections when you get home for your post-processing.
