This photo was taken along the Le Couesnon (The Couesnon River is a river running from the département of Mayenne in north-western France, forming an estuary at Mont Saint-Michel.) Was staying at the Le Relais du Roy hotel there is a lovely walkway that is 1.9km to the Mont.Time
September 2013. 8.00 pm at night. Was staying at the Le Relais du Roy hotel and looked out window after dinner and saw Mt-St-Michel lit up and since as I was only there one night I grabbed tripod and camera and headed out side to walk along the river Le Cousnon . Couldn't resist capturing such beauty.Lighting
As an amateur to photography and not done any real night photography, it was very much trial and error. Had recently attended a course on night photography. All I can say is the more practice the better. This was the best out of 15 photos of the same subject.Equipment
As I was new to photography at an older age (48), this was my first introduction to digital photography. I used my entry canon EOS 1100D. Manual setting, F-stop f/8, exposure time 10 sec., ISO- 400, Exposure bias 0 step, focal length 184mm. metering mode- partial. No flash required. Defiantly with tripodInspiration
I have always been fascinated my Mont-St-Michael, France and Paris and wanted to capture as much of my overseas trip as possible as this was my very first overseas adventure at 48 years old. Whilst also been aware there is a difference between holiday snapshots and great photographs. To me seeing this scene was truly a blessing that we don't all get to experience. The dark sky with Mont-St-Michael all alight felt to me a very magical, spiritual, holy place to see it lit up like this filled with me with a great sense of peace and been with one in the universe.Editing
A wee bit of cropping in light room and slight straightening, darkened the exposure slightly and a bit of highlight added.. I don't like doing a lot of post-processing. I like to shoot in JPEG and/or RAW.In my camera bag
To begin with it was very basic my Canon DSLR 1100D, Tamron 18 - 270mm lens, and Canon 100 - 400mm telescopic lens (mainly used for sons soccer and nature close-ups when I cant get close enough). I have recently up-graded to Canon 70D, still have the 18 - 270 and 100 - 400mm lenses. Now also have a Canon Macro 100mm lens and tripod. I always carry my camera body, appropriate lenses, a spare fully charged battery, spare SD card,a graduated filter, USB Filter and external flash drive and tripod.Feedback
Found it difficult to know what to pack for overseas travel, (especially for the very first time), as space was restricted. The most important thing for me was several SD cards I knew I didn't have a great deal of time so took as many shots as possible and was able to sort through them later on my lap-top. A sturdy but compact tripod. What I have learnt is patience, been able to listen and learn from others, getting to know your camera and not been afraid to try different settings and experiment. Be prepared as you never know when a great photography opportunity will come your way.
