Behind The Lens

Location

While on a trip to Thailand, this was taken at SIAM OCEAN WORLD. An Amazing Underground Aquarium, just blows your mind as to how its made. And the water creatures are bliss to watch.

Time

The Aquarium being underground its essentially a bit dark environment, with necessary lighting where needed.

Lighting

This was the first time I was watching a Lion Fish. Its frills, stripes, colour are in such a way that you would like to add a mysterious light and dark combination to make it look a bit dramatic. And also it so happened that the light for its enclosure was pretty bright. So to reduce overall bright light through out the picture (esp through the right lamp) and capture the light just around the periphery of the fish and corals, I tried reducing the Aperture (f11-f13) and gave a slight boost on ISO. And in result the Lion Roared! :)

Equipment

This shot was taken with Nikon D5100, with 18-55mm f/3.5 Kit Lens. Hand held, with no flash.

Inspiration

I had watched Lion Fish on television, but to be honest I never knew its name untill I saw its name tag in Siam Ocean World. The near translucent frills over the gills, the stripes gives it a look of a floating frock. So when it swayed through the corals and when the lights passed through its frills it looked brilliant, and so I had to capture it.

Editing

Yes there was a bit of processing done. As the picture looked dull through my laptop screen when compared to the look over the camera screen. So I had to enhance the brightness exposure for this picture.

In my camera bag

Above equipment was of a friends which kick started my hobby. But now as my own I carry a Canon 7D with 18-135mm Kit lens and a 430exII flash. Wish to get add a 85mm L, hopefully sooner. :)

Feedback

Being an Amateur photographer for now, instead of Advice I could share what I have experienced. For similar images, Reducing the Aperture and Increasing the ISO (while playing with increasing the Shutter Speed) have given me some really amazing clicks in terms of dramatic lighting. Like Sunsets with Golden lining with perfect round Sun, bright lined clouds, Morning flares around flower etc. Hope this helps. Happy Clicking!
