This photo was taken at Espichel Cape, Portugal. It's not one of the most popular places in Portugal to shoot, but I want to make this photo for several months.Time
Definitely 10/15 minutes after the sunset, to achieve a "good" sky full of color.Lighting
Is always about the light, isn't it? In this photo, the light is all! You must wait for a sky full of color, but even with the use of a grad ND filter, you must accomplish the minimal difference of light level between the sky and the sea.Equipment
I'm not rich, so I keep it simple always :) I use my good and old, but a little faulty Canon EOS 50D with my Sigma 10-20mm 4-5.6 DC HSM. About filters, only a Lee 0,6 hard edge to balance the light level of the sky.Tripod: Manfrotto 055XPROB (steady and reliable).Inspiration
I always think that the lighthouse on Espichel Cape deserved a good photo from the north side. I always imagine the tiny lighthouse above the brutal cliff with a soft colors sky to make the shift. But I have to wait several months to do it... Finally, the sun goes down in the right place between November and February and some days after Christmas, the cloud cover and the clean horizon appeared. It was a rush to make the 60kms from my home to there but it was done.Editing
Only Lightroom, but in this photo mother nature has helped a lot. The colors are there and worked well without boosting them. Only curves were adjusted and the shadow of the cliffs was decreased. In my camera bag
Few... in Portugal the crisis is hitting us hard and nobody sponsors me. I have a Canon EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM and a Sigma 10-20mm 4-5.6 DC HSM lens, Lee filters SE and HE 0,6 and 0,9, a Little Stopper, a Manfrotto tripod, a remote shutter and that's it. Maybe someday my bag is full of good stuff :)Feedback
I try to always keep things simple, but you have to be prepared to wait until the day that nature helps you to achieve what you want. You must consider always a good and a high cloud cover and an empty horizon line. When the sun comes down, is easier to the clouds gain rich colors. The rest is normal: one third focusing and always use a steady tripod. The aperture as small as your lens and camera can go maintaining the best image quality possible.
