Behind The Lens

Location

Our cruise ship was entering the Miami Florida harbor.

Time

I like to get up early on cruises as I pretty much have the decks to myself, except for staff. This was taken at 6:30 AM.

Lighting

Lighting was natural with just a hint of the coming sunrise in the sky.

Equipment

Shot with a Nikon D90, at 26 mm on a 18-200 Nikkor zoom lens, solidly mounted on a Manfrotto tripod.

Inspiration

As a retired architect, I am fascinated by the design of cruise ships and a city's skyline.

Editing

Due to the high contrast of lighting on the ship, and the skyline, I took 3 RAW exposures and used a manual HDR layering in Photoshop to achieve the desired effect.

In my camera bag

I typically carry only my Nikon D7500 with my walk-around Nikkor 18-300 mm lens. I find that the camera's excellent performance at high ISO values, and the vibration reduction in the lens means I do not need a tripod most of the time. When shooting architectural interiors I use a Tokina 11-16 mm lens with the Manfrotto tripod. When traveling I pack a compact MeFOTO tripod. For landscapes i use a circular polarizing filter.

Feedback

Get up early and use a tripod. Bracket your exposures.
