Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken just at "the back " of Cairns, Australia. Barron gorge national park. A 20 minute drive from CBD.

Time

The midday sun was the best natural light source for this photoshoot. I needed a hot sun for the mud to dry relatively fast.....

Lighting

The warm bright natural light was the best option for this photo-shoot. The aim was to achieve a fast drying time for the mud layers used and still keep the new ones fresh and moist.

Equipment

Nikon D3100

Inspiration

It's a concept photo based on my version of the Japanese "Wabi-Sabi" philosophy. Wabi-sabi nurtures all that is authentic by acknowledging three simple realities: nothing lasts, nothing is finished, and nothing is perfect. The crackling drying mud symbolises that all youth will fade and ageing is unavoidable. We never stop learning until the day we die. The vibrancy of the eyes represent a study and a curiosity for life. Wabi-Sabi in a nutshell stands for the perfection in the imperfection and this is what effect this photo has for me.....it's not a "pretty" photo and yet the balance between the "crackling old" skin and those young blue eyes is close to perfect...??!!

Editing

A little brightness and contrast for the black n white effect and slightly enhanced the colour vibrancy of the eyes.

In my camera bag

Feel naked without my camera in my bag...a constant companion...!!!

Feedback

Bucket, fine dried soil, water, hot location and a willing model friend.......that's all one needs......!!!
