This wreck of a loco heads up the Kyiv – Odesa Express as it pulls out of Kyiv Pasazhyrs’kyi on Saturday afternoon. The windscreen is smashed, the mirrors and windscreen wipers are missing, the bodywork is totally corroded and the driver looks about 17. But not to worry, he’s got two mates in the cab to help him.
If all goes well, it will eventually manage the 655km in 11h14m, an average speed of 58km-h.

I was actually intending to catch the emotions of people travelling, but this wreck of a loco caught my eye. It was heading up the Kyiv – Odesa Express as it pulled out of Kyiv Pasazhyrs’kyi on Saturday afternoon. The windscreen was smashed, the mirrors and windscreen wipers were missing, the bodywork was totally corroded and the driver looked about 17. But not to worry, he had two mates in the cab to help him. Assuming all went well, it should eventually have managed the 655km in 11h14m, an average speed of 58km/h.Editing
It was a rather grey day and although the sun came out briefly the colours were somewhat muted. This is HDR from five exposures (-2, -1, 0, +1, +2) of a single RAW image. And in the version that is for sale elsewhere, the man in shorts on the left has magically moved on!In my camera bag
I've still got the Nikon that I used for this shot, but only really use it now for photographing watersports (with a Sigma 150-500mm) or macro work (Sigma 105mm). For most of my work I've moved on to Fujifilm X mirrorless cameras. If I'm at home I'll have the X-T1 and X-T10 in my bag, along with 27mm, 18-135mm and 50-230mm Fujis, plus an 8mm Samyang. If I'm travelling, I'll just take the X-T10 and one or two lenses. Obviously the 18-135mm goes everywhere - the other one will depend on where I'm going and what I expect to photograph there! Always lots of batteries and SD cards in my bag as well.Feedback
Photographing railways in ex-USSR without permission is not always viewed well by the authorities. Be discrete - I didn't have any problems, but would have been much more comfortable with the Fuji X cameras I carry today.
