Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo whilst on a day out in London walking around Southbank. I was studying photography at college and had a tendency to stick to doing what I loved which was portrait photography. I remember it was starting to rain and I hadn’t captured anything of interest. I was lucky enough to have been standing facing the steps when the lady walked down. It really was just a case of being in the right place at the right time. I’ve since realised, whilst flicking through Banksy’s book, that this was the same location as his ‘girl with the red balloon’. Although it was removed by the council you can still make out the dark outline to the bottom right of the wall.

Time

It was early afternoon

Lighting

Lighting wasn’t great due to the weather so I over exposed slightly to ensure I captured the right mood

Equipment

I used a Canon 5d 50mm lens

Inspiration

I loved the shape of the steps but felt it missed something. Other people had walked down without umbrellas and they didn’t have the same impact as the woman I captured

Editing

I didn’t have to do much post processing. Simply adjusted contrast and converted to b&w to create a more dramatic moody feel to the image

In my camera bag

Always carry two cameras....just in case. 50mm (my favourite), 28-105mm (good all rounder) and a telephoto lens

Feedback

Be patient. Sometimes when you search for the perfect image it doesn’t happen. I enjoy people watching so I’ve learnt to take my time and keep my eyes peeled as images sometimes just appear out of nowhere.
