Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo on my property close to where our Aerobic Septic is located.

Time

This image was shot around 8am in the month of January

Lighting

It was a morning light that was sideways a bit. I had been noticing light thru smoke during some brush burns but it was never convenient to get the camera out. I loved the look of the light thru the smoke so when I saw the light going thru the water spray I had time to run and get the camera. The rays going thru the smoke was very similar to the rays going thru water spray.

Equipment

For this image I used my Sony DSLR-a900 with a Sigma APO DG 70-200mm 1:2.8 II lens. Hand held, no flash, processed using Aperture on my Mac

Inspiration

This was not a planned shot. I was out working on our property one morning when the septic spray went off. I noticed how the light rays was going through the septic spray, too cool looking not to run and get my camera. I had been wanting to try a shot with rays going thru smoke but when I saw the rays thru water spray it sparked me to run and grab the camera.

Editing

I did just a little post processing on this one. It naturally looked moody and I wanted to accentuate that and make it a little more dramatic looking. I don't remember exactly what I did but definitely added the green to give it an erie feeling. If I remember correctly there may have been spots that were blown out so I probably tweaked the highlights a bit

In my camera bag

These days I carry a Sony a99 camera. I shoot landscapes and events so it depends on what I'm shooting as to what lens I carry. My favorite lens to carry is my Sony 8/500 reflex lens, Sigma APO DG 70-200 1:2.8II Macro HSM, I love my Zeiss 1.4/85mm lens and also sony 2.8/20mm. I have an assortment of filters I carry, tripod when necessary, cable release when doing night shots or slow shutter shots. I always carry 2- 32GB SD cards and several batteries. I also love doing night photography, light painting, etc. For this I have a basket full of glow sticks, EL lights, steel wool and lots of "toys" to play with and try.

Feedback

To get this effect you would have to have the right light (sideways light) with some type of water spray or even smoke would work. I studied the smoke effect with the light rays but I favor the water spray, it's easier to see thru. It would also be important to position yourself to get the right look of the rays and closeness to the water spray. You can play with the shutter settings to get the look you're looking for with the water spray. Since this was taken in January there wasn't much leaves on the trees which helped the sun rays get through.
